Rituals with The Base Body Co. Founder, Sara Ayres

What does "self-care" mean to you?

Self-care to me is doing what feels good at that time to help me get back to the place I need to be. It could be meditating, writing, going for a walk on the beach. I have a non-negotiable night ritual, which incorporates meditation, a skincare routine, and journaling. It’s a time for me to prioritize myself so I can start the next day, with purpose, direction and giving the best version of myself.

How do you de-stress?

Grounding myself through meditation, self-hypnosis, Super Zen, being with friends and family, walks in nature or the beach. Anything that takes me out of my head and puts me into my body.

“When I take Super Zen it’s more what don’t I feel.”

How does Super Zen make you feel?

When I take Super Zen it’s more what don’t I feel. Instead of crashing in the midst of a stressful moment or task, I have a resilience.

I especially find it helpful when I can feel emotions arising. I’ll take it straight away every day for 4 days and that situation is a lot more manageable.

"I try hard to use medicine from the earth before going for pills.”

What inspired you to start The Base Body Co.?

I started The Base Body Co. when I was living in London. I was working for a wellness expert and was very fortunate to be able to come to work every day and learn new ways to live well. Where I lacked balance, was the overwhelm I found of living in a big city. The constant hustle was taking its toll on me, so I started to look into natural alternatives and healing modalities to help me live a full life, but feel less anxious and stressed. I try hard to use medicine from the earth before going for pills. I spent years learning ways to balanced life for myself.

When I returned to Australia I knew it was time to share that.

What are some of your favorite healthy foods?

I love simple, fresh whole foods. Nothing tastes better than a meal cooked from scratch with ingredients that just came out of the ground.

My favorite meal would include seafood. A snack is something like avocado on crackers with baby tomatoes, fresh basil, and olive oil with a sprinkle of sea salt – YUM!

What are your favorite supplements, herbs, and healthy products?

I swear by Osea, an LA based skincare brand. I enjoy taking my time to apply it during my nightly rituals. My favorite is their Hyaluronic Sea Serum and Ocean Cleanser.

I also love adaptogen herbs, we created a special blend of rhodiola, rehmannia, ashwagandha, and alma. All four are amazing and great for inflammation, stress and adrenal balance.

I’ll have Super Zen as a latte with almond milk or I’ll add it to my morning smoothie.

I love starting my day with a smoothie. I usually create one of Kelly Leveque's and add Super Zen or AfterGlow.

Now and then, I will have a kombucha or a glass of organic wine. I have a sweet tooth and am obsessed with Loving Earth chocolate.

I split my time between Australia and LA and when I am in Los Angeles I live at, Erewhon Market. I love trying all the incredible, interesting products.
